I'm willing to see where they go with Sebastian. It wouldn't be completely unbelievable to me that this hit him so hard that he changes. (He may be enough of an ass that a serious injury wouldn't make him reconsider his life path, but a near-death that he didn't do anything to prevent may.) It also wouldn't be unbelievable if the guilt produces only a temporary change in his ethics, and then he slips back into his bad habits.
Even when I get character whiplash, I tend to adjust after a few episodes to whatever the writers want to present. My personality changed drastically multiple times when I was a teenager, so when that happens to the kids in Glee, it eventually strikes me as believable.
