I guess I've always had this personal definition of romantic angst where the parties spend most of the story apart longing for each other and being miserable and there is much miscommunication and inner (and probably outer) conflict, and then they may or may not end up together in the end, depending on how nice the author is. Substantially more difficult to read through than the typical romance story, which may have the same elements superficially but spends most of its time being sweeter, I suppose.
